General use of bonded abrasive cutting and grinding discs mounted in hand-held and angle grinders or free-standing crosscut machines

EXISTING & ADDITIONAL CONTROL 

Existing Control measures

  1. Adequate numbers of operatives appointed and trained to change abrasive wheels and discs
  2. Each appointee is to carry proof of authorization.
  3. The correct type of wheels/discs are available to suit the type of work, spindle speeds, etc.
  4. Wherever practicable, abrasive wheels fitted with working guards designed to contain every part of the wheel if it fractures
  5. Good ventilation in place if dust is a hazard
  6. Abrasive wheels stored in a dry area that is not susceptible to extreme temperatures
  7. Proper storage facilities for wheels and discs
  8. All new discs are inspected for damage before being fitted
  9. The work area is kept free of debris underfoot
  10. All cutters and grinders are regularly maintained
  11. No loose clothing worn


ADDITIONAL CONTROL MEASURES

Information, instruction, and training

  1. Other persons warned when dust, flying particles, and noise are likely to be produced.
  2. All operatives who may use abrasive wheels are trained in the storing, handling, transporting, testing, working, and adjustment of abrasive wheels; as in their hazards and the recognition of different types.
  3. All operatives are trained to use the appropriate PPE.
  4. Extra training is a mandatory requirement for mounting or dressing abrasive wheels.
  5. Proof of training and certificates of appointment from employers carried by each operative
  6. Details of training and appointments are entered on the abrasive wheels register.
